Biography: Prudence Poon

prudence-poonNineteen-year-old Prudence Poon from Hong Kong, has studied piano since age 3. At age 10, she made her first orchestral debut with the Hong Kong Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. Prudence has been keenly participating in competitions and festivals, and was awarded prizes in numerous competitions, including the first place in the Junior Exhibitioner Award and Tom Lee Scholarship, second runner-up in the 75th Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition Amateur Class. In 2012, she was awarded the licentiate diploma with distinction in piano performance from the Royal Schools of Music, and was invited to be one of the performers in the ABRSM Diploma Awards Ceremony, Hong Kong & Macau Region.

Apart from participating actively in local competitions, Prudence participated in The Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition in 2012. In the competition, she was invited to play at the Reinberger Chamber Hall of the renowned Severance Hall in Cleveland. In 2016, she was selected as one of 22 finalists in the 8th New York International Piano Competition, and was awarded the Melvin Stecher and Norman Horowitz Prize.

In addition to her studies with Yim Wan in Hong Kong, Prudence has been fortunate to work with renowned pianists such as Lang Lang, Gary Graffman, Pascal Roge and Stanislav Ioudenitch

She is currently at Oberlin Conservatory, pursuing a Bachelors of Music in piano performance and vocal accompanying as a merit scholarship recipient, under the tutelage of Robert Shannon.
