Biography: Giovanni Bertoni, clarinet

Born in Crema, Italy, Giovanni Bertoni currently studies at the Oberlin College and Conservatory under the tutelage of Richard Hawkins. Bertoni earned his clarinet diploma at the Orazio Vecchi e Antonio Tonelli school of music in Modena, studying under Corrado Giuffredi. He has performed across Europe and the United States. In 2011, he was the clarinet soloist in the Bertold Brecht theatre show La Resistibile Ascesa di Arturo UI, where he performed various Kurt Weill’s solo pieces in Teatro Stochi, in Modena. Bertoni has performed with the Round Top Festival Orchestra, the Emilia-Romagna Opera Orchestra, the Contemporary Music Ensemble of Oberlin, the Oberlin Orchestra, the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra and the Oberlin Sinfonietta. Bertoni’s festival appearances include a fellowship in the prestigious Round Top Festival Institute, the Oberlin in Italy opera program in Arezzo, Italy, and the Kinhaven Music School. Bertoni has performed at Chicago Symphony Hall, Ganz Hall, Severance Hall and recently as a soloist at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Bertoni is also committed to exploring jazz, Brazilian, and Middle Eastern music. He has performed and worked with the artists  Snarky Puppy, Banda Magda, Tim Ries, Kalaman Olah, Gonzalo Grau, Julien Labro and Trio Globo. Bertoni is a member of the Oberlin College swim team and enjoys composing experimental electronic music in his free time.
